This year is our 25th birthday. But that’s not all we’re celebrating, we’re also thrilled that this year marks nearly 25 million animals (plus many millions of salmon and trout) being farmed to higher welfare standards on RSPCA Assured farms.
Twenty-five years ago, Freedom Food was launched, and in 2015, we changed our name to RSPCA Assured. Since then, the number of terrestrial animals on assured farms has risen by 54% which is about 11% of the UK farming market. We are also proud to have the majority of Scottish salmon farms under the scheme now.
As we get older and wiser, it’s also good to see that we are being recognised more. Our RSPCA Assured logo is now recognised by 58% of young professionals and families and our general consumer awareness level increased from 15% to 51% today in just four years.
Of course, our CEO Clive Brazier is very excited about everything we’ve achieved and about where we will be going in the future.
“Despite a difficult political backdrop of uncertainty for the food and farming industry, these results continue to reflect the growing trend for ethical food and are further reassurance that consumers are standing firm by farm animal welfare.”
The RSPCA Assured logo can now be found on nearly 1,300 different products.
Furthermore, the amount of food carrying the RSPCA Assured label increased by nearly 25% between 2016 and 2018. You can find RSPCA Assured labelled bacon and other products at supermarkets like Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Co-op and Lidl. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for on their shelves, let them know with our lobby your supermarket tool. So from all of us at RSPCA Assured, thank you so much for your support over the last 25 years and here’s to hoping the next 25 will be even better.
“We couldn’t have done it without the hard work and dedication of all our members, retail and restaurant partners, and without consumers increasingly demanding higher welfare products.”
