Celebrating women in higher welfare farming this International Women’s Day

Every year on 8 March, the world celebrates International Women’s Day – a time to celebrate women’s achievements, recognise their contributions across every sector and continue the push for gender equality.

At RSPCA Assured, it’s also an opportunity to shine a light on the vital role women play in advancing higher welfare farming across the UK.

From farmers and farm managers to vets, farm assessors and supply chain professionals, women in agriculture are helping shape a more responsible and compassionate food system.

What’s International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day is a global awareness day that recognises the achievements of women, while calling for gender equality in all industries.

Across farming and animal welfare, it’s a moment to reflect on progress, celebrate contributions and inspire future generations.

Why International Women’s Day matters to agriculture

International Women’s Day is more than a moment of recognition – it’s a chance to reflect on progress, highlight leadership and encourage greater diversity in industries that have traditionally been male-dominated, including farming.

Making a difference at RSPCA Assured

Women are represented throughout the RSPCA Assured scheme.

This includes specialists within the RSPCA farm animals department who develop and review the welfare standards, and RSPCA Assured assessors, who carry out assessments on our members’ farms to ensure those standards are being met.

Inspiring the next generation of women in farming

International Women’s Day is also about looking ahead. Supporting women in agriculture encourages more young people to consider careers in farming and animal welfare.

When women see others leading, innovating and succeeding in agriculture, it helps broaden perceptions of what’s possible and strengthens the future of the sector.

At RSPCA Assured, we’re proud to work alongside talented women who bring knowledge, dedication and care to their roles every day.

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate women across UK farming and animal welfare who are helping raise standards and improve the lives of millions of animals.

Their leadership, expertise and commitment are shaping a more compassionate and responsible food system – something truly worth recognising, today and every day.
