RSPCA senior scientific and policy officer

Phoebe Hartnett

Phoebe Hartnett is a senior scientific and policy officer in the RSPCA's farm animals department, where she is dedicated to improving pig welfare.

She has a degree in agricultural animal science and a PhD in pig welfare – with a focus on gilt and sow welfare – from the University of Limerick. Following her PhD, Phoebe did post-doctoral research experience in dairy livestock systems at Teagasc Moorepark.

Whilst studying at university, Phoebe learned first-hand that pigs are one of the most remarkable, clever, and misunderstood species.

Her role at the RSPCA allows her to turn her passion for pig welfare into meaningful improvements to farmed pigs’ lives.

Previously, Phoebe worked as a scientific officer at the Health Products Regulatory Authority, where she was responsible for implementing the EU directive on scientific animal protection and promoting the 3Rs (replacement, reduction, and refinement).

Outside of work, Phoebe’s an avid hiker and traveller who lives for magical moments in nature. She’s always looking for the next mountain to climb or wild species to spot.
