New RSPCA welfare standards for hatcheries
By press team, RSPCA Assured

We’re pleased to share that the RSPCA has updated its welfare standards for hatcheries.
These changes will come into effect for RSPCA Assured members on 16 February 2026, after the usual three-month notice period.
Every update is designed to help you continue delivering the best possible welfare for chicks and poults.
Thanks to your ongoing care and dedication, together we’re continuing to make a real difference to animals’ lives. We truly appreciate everything you do.
What’s changed?
Here’s a quick look at some of the key updates:
- Improved requirements for culling, aligned with the latest Humane Slaughter Association guidance
- Plans to prevent the killing of healthy, viable birds
- Improved bird handling measures, including posture stability and recovery, and limits on overcrowding
- New emergency planning requirements for fires, floods, power loss and more
- Improved training requirements for staff
- Introduction of a written wild animal control plan (WACP) that prioritises humane methods and protects non-target species
- Clearer expectations for the use of new technologies, such as in-ovo vaccination and artificial intelligence
- Permission is now required for sea, air or rail transport with clear welfare plans.
How the standards are developed
The latest science, evidence and practical farming experience shape each update.
We work closely with welfare experts, producers and industry partners to make sure the standards stay progressive, practical and achievable for you – while continuing to lead the way in animal welfare.
