laying hen farmer and RSPCA Assured member

Phil Twizell

Phil Twizell is the owner of The Good Egg Fellas, an independent egg producer based in Sadberge, County Durham. A lifelong farmer, Phil has worked with livestock for as long as he can remember, starting out in pig production before moving into free-range egg farming in 2009.

Now celebrating more than 15 years of rearing laying hens to RSPCA higher welfare standards under the RSPCA Assured scheme, Phil is one of the programme’s longest-standing members.

His approach is rooted in the strong belief that animals are sentient beings and that good welfare is a fundamental responsibility of farming.

At The Good Egg Fellas, Phil leads a small, dedicated team focused on welfare-led production. His hens live in free-range systems that allow them to express natural behaviours such as dustbathing, scratching and exploring.

The farm also takes a sustainability-led approach, using solar power, planting thousands of trees and rotating paddocks to protect and restore the land.

Phil and his team have received national recognition for their work, including multiple industry awards, reflecting their commitment to producing high-quality eggs while maintaining higher welfare standards.

He’s also a strong advocate for higher welfare farming, encouraging consumers to support systems that prioritise the animals’ wellbeing.
