In 2024, Mother's Day falls on Sunday, 10 March. Much like Easter, the exact date of Mother's Day changes each year.
In the UK, Mothering Sunday always falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter. This is different from Mother's Day in the US, which always falls on the second Sunday in May.
Mothering Sunday has a more traditional religious origin; during Lent, it was typical for people to travel back to their place of birth and visit the church where they were baptised. Servants were often given the day off to do this and so at the same time, they would visit their mothers.
Over time this tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and around the 1930s and 40s, it became a day when children would give gifts and cards to their mothers.
Whatever the day, and whatever its origin, it’s always a good occasion to let Mum know that you care. And what better way to show mum some love than with chocolate!
