Easy hot cross buns recipe for Easter

These days most of us buy hot cross buns from the supermarket - but with our easy recipe you can make your own delicious Easter buns.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

490g strong white flour
7g easy bake yeast
2tbsp caster sugar
200g dried fruit
1½ tsps mixed spice
1tsp ground cinnamon
Pinch of salt
Zest of an orange
50g butter, melted
250ml warm milk
1 RSPCA Assured egg, whisked
2tbsp water
2 tbsp sugar

Hot cross bun facts

  • Hot cross buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday and mark the end of Lent
  • One story goes that the hot cross bun originated in St Albans - the ‘Alban bun’ was given to the poor on Good Friday
  • There are lots of superstitions about hot cross buns. One is that if you take hot cross buns on board a ship they’ll help prevent shipwreck

In 2017, Easter Good Friday is on 14 April (a bank holiday in the UK) and Easter Sunday is on 16 April
